Senior Laboratory Technician

Prepare media, cultures, reagents, stains, solutions and glassware for the sanitation, shellfish disease, virus and phytoplankton/toxin programs. Maintain hazardous bacterial cultures. Maintain varying degrees of complex laboratory equipment. Bacteriological examination of seawater, shellfish and related samples to support the shellfish sanitation program. Work alongside the Bacteriologist and Associate Bacteriologist performing sophisticated (genetic and viral) testing procedures for pathogenic bacteria in seawater, sewage treatment plant and shellfish samples. Assist in the examination of phytoplankton and the acid extraction of saxitoxin from the shellfish samples for the biotoxin program. Learn new scientific procedures as program needs develop. Must be able to work at lab bench performing repetitive sample inoculations and culture transfers. Must be able to lift containers weighing 25 to 30 pounds to load/unload sterilizers. Must be capable of reaching to operate equipment and access supplies and materials in storage cabinets.

Salary Range:
From $43484 to $53081 Annually

Minimum Qualifications for Provisional Appointment:
Promotional:
An employee of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and have had one year of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as a Laboratory Technician. Open-Competitive:
Either 1. completed at least 120 semester credit hours of college coursework which includes at least 18 semester credit hours in either biology, chemistry, physics, health science, or science technology and six (6) additional semester credit hours in science, mathematics, or computer science; Or 2. three years of satisfactory experience in either a laboratory or clinical setting performing laboratory tests and procedures; Or 3. a combination of 1 and 2 above equaling three years. College study will be credited in six-month segments, with 15 semester credit hours equaling six months. Credits must include at least 18 semester credit hours in either biology, chemistry, physics, health science, or science technology and six (6) additional semester credit hours in science, mathematics, or computer science. Reassignment - Currently in the title and an employee of DEC or Reinstatement Eligible - Previously held the title on a permanent competitive basis or held a title as indicated under the transfer eligible section on a permanent competitive basis. or Transfer Eligible - One year of permanent competitive service at Salary Grade 10 or higher and either:
